Choose This Day

Joshua has always been one my favorites from all of the men of the Bible. He is Moses’ mighty right hand, He and Caleb are the only ones who spy the Land of Israel and aren’t afraid. Time after time he does the right thing, even now in his old age he encourages all to be string and courageous. He tells all of Israel in simple times that anyone could understand…here is what the Lord has done for you!

Joshua 24:15

But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”

It’s a simple choice, one that we still understand today. Don’t flounder about here and there, stand strong, either serve the Lord or don’t…don’t say you will serve Him and then really not mean it or do it…as for me I choose יהוה Yahovah. How

many today say they believe in God…yet they really don’t. They’ve concocted a god in their mind…a Santa Claus god who gives them what they ask for but then disappears to the North Pole. Many in this country call themselves Christians…they even fill our churches yet they refuse to believe the very things the name they call themselves demands!

This recent Barna study of regular church attendees sorted by church size is pretty troubling. First of all the overall pathetic numbers for people agreeing with basic tenets of Faith!

A good person cannot earn a place in Heaven 33  39  47  48  55

The best number there is 55% for people of churches with 1000 or more in attendance! Why even bother! If all we have to do is be good people to get into Heaven then why did Jesus come? Just try harder! If we can to Heaven on our own we don’t need a savior…we just need a guide. Sounds to me like our churches aren’t filled with Disciples of Christ but disciples of Buddha! All we need is the right path, the right discipline, the right thinking and we can achieve enlightenment…wow!

Choose this day who you will serve! By these numbers a good two-thirds of all who attend church regularly are wasting their time…oh, maybe that’s what makes them a good person? It’s amazing, we haven’t changed at all, and we are still those people that Joshua is speaking of. Still uncertain of who to serve, still uncertain of where to go, still wandering lost in the wilderness.
