Service of Word and Table III - Holy Communion Liturgy for August 2nd Virtual Worship

Monday, July 27, 2020

This Sunday we will be sharing Holy Communion during our worship service. Please read below as to how you can prepare your elements and yourselves for the service.

Please remember as Wesleyan in nature, we believe that this sacrament is open to all people. We just ask that if you have unforgiveness in your heart toward anyone, that you take a moment to offer that person forgiveness while asking the LORD God for healing in your own heart. We also believe that if you have not been baptized, you are welcome at the Lord's table; we ask that when you are ready that you would contact Pastor Dean or other clergy to discuss the possibility of your baptism.

We as United Methodists believe the Sacraments, ordained by Christ, are symbols and pledges of the Christian’s profession and of God’s love toward us. They are means of grace by which God works invisibly in us, quickening, strengthening and confirming our faith in him.

We believe the Lord’s Supper is a representation of our redemptions, a memorial of the sufferings and death of Christ, and a token of love and union which Christian have with Christ and with one another.

Those who rightly, worthily (note that in the eyes of Christ we are all worthy even if we do not believe we are) and in faith eat the broken bread and drink the blessed cup partake of the body and blood of Christ in a spiritual manner until He comes. (The United Methodist Book of Discipline)

How to participate in Holy Communion from Home

Here is what is necessary for any expression, celebration, or participation.

  1. Holy Communion is celebrated in the context of worship. When you have worshiped online, you are part of the context.
  2. The consecration of the bread and cup provides the opportunity for the whole community to participate in the broken body and shed blood of Jesus.
  3. Bread, tortilla shell, pita bread or Crackers (Have enough available f or those gathered in your location): Use your best judgement on what to use.
  4. Grape Juice (have enough available for those gathered in your location): Grape juice is preferable. If you do not have grape juice, use your best judgement on a replacement. The point is to participate in the body and blood of Christ.
  5. As the pastor leads the service, participating online will have special meaning and benefits. Holy Communion is a community act of worship.
  6. We will be following “A Service of Word and Table III” below or you access it in a seperate tab at http://www.stidhamumc.org/clientimages/43185/communiontableiii/communion_service_of_word_and_table_iii.pdf

Service of Word and Table III

The Great Thanksgiving

Pastor (P): The Lord be with you.

ALL: AND ALSO WITH YOU.

P: Lift up you hearts.

ALL: WE LIFT THEM UP TO THE LORD.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

ALL IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE.

(The Pastor gives thanks appropriate to the occasion, remembering God’s acts of salvation and concludes;)

P: And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

ALL: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD, GOD OF POWER AND MIGHT,

HEAVEN AND EARTH ARE FULL OF YOUR GLORY.

HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST.

BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD.

HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST.

(The pastor continues the Thanksgiving. The institution of the Lord’s Supper is recalled, the Pastor continues:)

P: And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

ALL: CHRIST HAS DIED; CHRIST IS RISEN; CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN.

(The pastor invokes the present work of the Holy Spirit and then praises the Trinity, concluding:)

P: All honor and glory is yours, almighty Father (God) now and for ever.

ALL: AMEN.

ALL: PRAY “THE LORD’S PRAYER”

Sharing of the Bread and Cup

(After the table is put back in order;)

ALL: ETERNAL GOD, WE GIVE YOU THANKS FOR THIS HOLY MYSTERY

IN WHICH YOU HAVE GIVEN YOURSELF TO US.

GRANT THAT WE MAY GO INTO THE WORLD

IN THE STRENGTH OF YOUR SPIRIT,

TO GIVE OURSELVES FOR OTHERS,

IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD. AMEN.
